the neighborhood menace

This sweet little kitten has been tormenting my creatures for a couple months now.  He (I think it’s a he) is a neighbor’s mostly outdoor kitty, and his favorite place to hang is directly in front of the big windows in front of my house.  These windows.

This tree?  Less than four feet from those windows — you can see it in the photos of Bear’s stunt.

It’s driving me crazy (because it’s driving my crash-test-dummy dogs crazy), but I have to admit, the little dude is freaking adorable.

So I joined in on the puppy torment and went out and played with him.  SUPER friendly. And playful.

And maybe part kangaroo. (He found a leaf, and it was the best thing ever.)

What happens if you decide to stop playing before he’s ready for you to…

He’s grown up a bit since these photos were taken – but has found some neighborhood friends to hang with in my front yard.  He’s still friendly, but is sort of teenager-friendly now – only on his terms and only when his friends aren’t watching.

Poochie Freak - Awwww, gorgeous photos – and a beautiful cat 🙂

Leanne - These are AWESOME, Deb!! Just awesome and SHEESH, I totally missed that Bear pot – how mental!
(did you ever get a replacement?)

Ruth - So gorgeous!!!

Debbie - Leanne – Scary thing is Bear’s broken through a door — two panes of glass plus the wood divider — since. But I have fixed it – I put up plexi on the inside of the windows. It’s worked really well and you have to really look to even see it’s there.

Anita - He is PAINFULLY cute!!!! Oh man I love kittens!

Sarah - How friggin’ cute!!! That kitty would have a new home if he was in my backyard 😉 Love that he is just “teenager friendly”! Lol!

nick - Haha very cute! Love those playful action shots 🙂

Leanne - Shoot, Debbie! Is Bear made of utter muscle??

Lily - Love the photos and want to play with him! What is his name??

goodbye, sweet boo-dog

My sister and brother-in-law are saying goodbye to their sweet girl, Bowie, today.  You may remember that I posted a few months ago that she’d been diagnosed with osteocarcoma.  They successfully had her front leg amputated – she recovered quickly and adapted easy to the tripod life.  Unfortunately, though there weren’t any obvious signs that the cancer had spread at the time, it had.

So now it’s time to say goodbye.  Certainly the right thing to do, but that doesn’t make it any easier.

Hands, Goobs.

Melissa Adams Hammonds - Sending warm thoughts and prayers. I just went through this with my Trader 3 weeks ago, and I know how painful it is. He had lymphoma, and even though we knew the time was coming, saying goodbye was just heartbreaking. Thank goodness they have your wonderful photos in addition to all the great experiences and memories.

Charlotte Reeves - The hardest decision to make. Sending much love and strength to your brother and sister in law. I went through the same with my Kaya, it really is heartbreaking. Gorgeous photo of a sweet looking girl.

Joe - Flying Doggies - I’m so sorry. My heart is just breaking for you guys and Bowie. I had to make that heart breaking decision for my sweet Dalmatian, Jessie. She was 15 years old. I’m sorry for your loss and understand your pain.
“It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart.
If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are.” – Cheryl Zuccaro
thank Dog she is always here in these beautiful photos.

Angela - Hands. Thanks Doobs. I am so grateful to have that beautiful photo book you made for us and especially the photos of her running and playing fetch. She was such a big part of our life for the last 10 years, and the house seems quiet and lonely already. I know we made the right decision and I am glad she isn’t suffering any more, but it still really hurts.

Patrick - Our hearts are with you! Bowie will never be forgotten and I’m sure the good memories will help pull y’all through this tough time. Here’s a poem a customer sent our way that I want to share… it’s really beautiful…

Patrick - I just noticed Joe beat me sharing Cheryl’s quote!

pet portraits - when i was going to take photo for my dog, i have to make him run around, and after he used all of his energy, he will lie down, that’s best time to take photos

boomer, the other co-pilot

As promised… here’s Boomer, the other co-pilot of Flying Doggies!, and Harley’s handsome chocolate brother.

Boomer is not quite as crazy as his brother though he has a tendency to get a tad overexcited…. We actually had to try to slow him down a bit to let him catch his breath (and slow his heartbeat) so he wouldn’t overexert himself too much.

He’s got a reaaaallly long tongue!

LEAVES!

The look on Boomer’s face cracks me up.

Patrick Kiker - I had no idea Boomer’s tongue really was that long!

The leaves transitions make me LAUGH!

Amazing!

Joe - Flying Doggies - My baby boy! Isn’t he the most handsome thing ever?!

Michelle - Wow! Great pics!

Ann Prather - Wow! Beautiful photos of Boomer. He’s a handsome one. We can almost forgive him for not being a swimmer like Harley.

harley, co-pilot of flying doggies

Harley is one of the co-pilots of Flying Doggies, a fab online dog (and cat) boutique.  Boomer, Harley’s chocolate brother, will be coming in a separate post.  Take at look at the shop and I think you’ll get an idea of just how spoiled these boys must be!

I first met the human components of Flying Doggies last year at LifeBark, and we’ve had booths set up near one another at a number of events since.  They’re awesome so I was thrilled when I got the call it was time to shoot the pups!

I think this shoot was the first one I’ve had where I did not dole out a single treat.  Not a one.  The boys had no interest in anything but running through the tall grasses, chasing after the ball (and each other), and, for Harley, watching after the ducks and pelicans (he was itching to go in after them — Boomer, though also a lab, is scared of the water).  Harley’s a very stereotypical lab – boisterous, ball-obsessed, with neverending energy.  He and Bear also share a less-than-desirable habit of leaping through windows.

It may be surprising to some, but winter is one of my favorite times to shoot.  The afternoon skies are either gorgeous blue or there is a beautiful soft light depending on the day, the temperatures are tolerable, the grasses are tall (and chigger-free), and the dogs seem to have a special energy.  It seems to really suit the working and sporting dogs in particular.

Patrick - Debbie,

You’ve done it again!

We love all these pictures and it’s going to be difficult to narrow it down to the top 50 favorites (of each doggie, of course)!

You really captured Harley’s true inner doggie and we have proof positive why choosing you to work with the boys was the best decision we made.

We can’t wait to see Boomer’s pictures. We know darker coated dogs can be harder to photograph (well, for us mere point-n-shooters).

Thank you, thank Dog!
