brooks | dallas dog photography

There are very few things in this world that can possibly compete with the cuteness of a lab puppy.  And Brooks is no slouch in the adorable department.

He’s a funny little guy – all feet, ears and belly… and needle-like teeth.  That he puts to good use.  He’s very full of himself as he struts around – well, that is until he runs across his nemesis, stairs.  He has no problem leaping off a 2-3 step high dropoff, but a set of stairs is still too daunting (to go down – they’re great fun to go up).  Favorite toy?  A sock.  Next favorite?  A running shoe, which he digs out of the closet and proudly carries around (still in the super cute category since he hasn’t done any real damage yet!).

Another too long slideshow – but it’s a lab puppy.  As if I’m going to be able to narrow down the shots to just a few.  This was hard enough!

nick - I totally would have stolen him haha..

Anita - Oh my god, is he ever ADORABLE!!

Your work always blows me away Deb:)

Shauna (Fido & Wino) - “…until he runs across his nemesis, stairs…”- made me laugh.

Adorable!

sarah - omg, carrying the shoe with his face inside is awesome!

jenn - These images made me giggle and remember all the fun i had with my two pups…
Thanks for the trip down memory lane:)

Ruth - What Anita said ^^^. Love your work 🙂

puppies!

Finally, the puppies I promised a few weeks ago… [Fortunately – or unfortunately – I think all these guys have been adopted.  They don’t last long when they’re this cute, but I hear there’s another litter under Paws’ care!]

A little over a month ago, Paws in the City rescued a litter of brown and black pups (and mom, Cinnamon) from the city shelter (no place for puppies!). Urban Paws was generous enough to take them in until they were old enough to start looking for forever homes.  I went by to visit the litter of nine – and stayed for entirely too long getting a good, long fill of puppy breath.  They were about a month old at that point and were just starting to progress from little fuzzy blogs to mobile fuzzy chewing machines.  They spent most of the time sleeping or harassing their mother, constantly battling for a primo nursing spot, with an occasional wrestling match.  Surprisingly (to me, at least), the four brown puppies all hung out together, and the five black ones did as well– there really wasn’t much cross-over between the two.  That turned out to be pretty fortunate, really, because the litter had been exposed to coccidia but the effects were pretty much limited to just the black ones (so it only hit about half the litter, though it did hit that half hard — so much so that the little black runt didn’t make it).  The five blacks were removed and put under vet care until the surviving four were healthy enough and then transitioned to a foster home until they were ready for adoption.  All the while, the little brown kids (three boys and a girl) thrived, never  even showing any symptoms.  I went back for two more visits with the little bear cubs, each about a week apart.  It’s amazing to see how fast they grow from sweet baby cubs into mischievous little creatures who sleep a lot less and poop a lot more (and have developed a strong love for their favorite toy, a broom).  After my last visit, they left Urban Paws for a foster homes to start learning the basics of crate-training and housebreaking so they’d be ready when it was time for them to find homes.

The shooting conditions weren’t ideal but that didn’t stop me from taking a zillion or so shots.

Briana - Brown pups with green eyes are the CUTEST thing ever! 🙂

nick - An adorable way to start the day 😀

Ruth - LOVE! <3

deigo | dallas dog photography

I love when I get a contract back and it indicates that among the dog’s favorite toys are “sticks and rocks.”

Deigo also likes frisbees and tennis balls.  Which makes him… a golden, of course!  He’s a gorgeous dog and very well loved (his session was a gift from daughter to father).  But he’s hard core when it comes to his retrieving job.

Our shoot was my shortest yet — but I ended up having such a hard time narrowing down the shots to a reasonable number (and I still didn’t really succeed).  So this long post only reflects a selection of shots from the creek portion of our shoot (though they are some new favorites!).

And the craziest thing? Deigo is TEN years old!  Seriously.  Ten.

nick - Love all these high action shots =) well captured essence of retriever

Eleanor Nunez - I love these photos! I happen to know the beautiful Diego and his owner Chemo. These are truly amazing and do depict both owner and Diego beautifully.

Tovah - Gorgeous shots! And a beautiful dog. I love the shot of his kind face but the pouncing water shots are awesome too. Goldens are great, I’m so glad I got to grow up with several of them.

jenn - Lots of variety and fun in these images…i have several favorites. I would be estatic if this were my pup!!! Awesome images, the persinality comesright thru:)

black dog + white dog + stick + water = FUN » thank Dog. photography - […] week so I decided to pack the dork and the doofus up and head to the creek in Garland where I shot Deigo.  They both LOVED it.  I took my camera and took a few shots — the photos are Belle-heavy […]

arfhouse | texas dog photography

A couple weeks ago, I headed out to Sadler, TX (near Sherman) to visit the Animal Refuge Foundation (ARFhouse).  I’m not sure how I first heard about it, but I had checked out the website and was curious about seeing the operation firsthand.  I finally made the trek on an overcast morning, after several days of rain.

Martha Hovers created ARFhouse about 20 years ago when she inherited her grandfather’s 25 acre farm.  ARFhouse offers refuge and care for unwanted, abused and/or physically challenged dogs and has become the third largest care-for-life, no-kill canine sanctuary in the US – at any given time, there are about 250 to 350 dogs living there.  Some of the dogs are free to roam the property, swim in the ponds, and chew on the sticks.  The others live in 30′ by 60′ runs, usually with one or two other dogs, each with their own doghouse.  The budget to run the place is about $175,000 annually, relying entirely on private donations.  Martha works long hours but relies on her staff and a bunch of volunteers to help the place running, and the dogs fed and healthy.  A lot of the dogs are up for adoptions – others aren’t for health or behavioral issues.

I left ARFhouse with bittersweet feelings — it is wonderful that so many dogs’ lives have been saved, but sad that many of them will spend their remaining years in runs, longing for attention.  The staff does their best, but with a few hundred dogs, there is only so much attention you can give each one.  Some of the dogs clearly love living out on the farm, able to roam (particularly the herding dogs), but as I walked down the path between runs, dogs came running to the fences, frantic for a little love and attention — it was a little heartbreaking.

As I do, I took a ton of photos – these are just a fraction of the dogs out there, many of whom are up for adoption.

gingela5 - Those pictures are wonderful! I know what you mean about feeling bittersweet in regards to animal shelters. There’s always a few that will never be adopted and it breaks my heart that their lives are lived out in cages or in small runs. People do the best they can I guess. Of course this makes me want to run out and adopt all of them!

briana - Debbie,
Magnificent work. Do you think you could add links to contact information on ARF in your post? I’m sure I’ve heard of Martha’s organization before, but your images are the reason I want to know more about it and see if I can help. Beautiful work, Debbie. Please keep at it. 🙂 -Briana

nick - Great job with the pics 🙂 Hope this will spread the word and fimd them homes asap!

debbie - Thanks all. It’s always hard to visit these kind of places and see all the dogs that have been cast aside for one reason or another, but ARFhouse is not nearly as depressing as the city shelters where the dogs are kept in small crates. For the most part, the dogs did seem content (and were certainly friendly!) and some seemed to think they were in their own little heaven.

Briana – there should be a link in the beginning of the post to their website, but just in case, it’s arfhouse.com.

SqueakDog Pet Photography - This post melted my heart. I’m glad these wonderful dogs have a place to live out their lives. They probably cherish any attention they get, and have LOTS of dog friends to help share their days. How amazing you got to meet a woman like Martha. What an angel.

leslie in seattle - AMAZING photos – what a gift you have. Thank you – the dogs are all beautiful and actually look so sweet and happy.

colette robinsin - These are beautiful pictures because they are all beautiful dogs.
A great way to let everyone know about the wonderful work that Martha and staff are doing at ARF. This just makes me smile.
