norton | in memory

I met Norton last fall when I was photographing his two foster siblings, Lily and Guenther (he was the large in the small-medium-large boxer posse).  He had been having seizures, but they seemed to be under control with medication – so much so that he was headed to his new forever home soon after our session.  Unfortunately, the seizures came back shortly thereafter, and the medication stopped working.  So his sweet foster parents took him back in to see if they could nurse him back to health.  I saw him again a few weeks ago – he was weak from the drugs being given to him, but the hope was that they could stabilize his system, and then wean him off the drugs that were causing the ataxia.  The big guy was still super sweet – happy to lap up some love.

Sadly though, I just received news that big Norton was helped to the bridge today.  He was not making any progress on the medication, and the side effects were not subsiding.  He clearly wasn’t getting or feeling any better, and he let his foster parents know it was time for them to let him go.  He’s already missed.

Cindy - RIP.. Norton.
You were loved and will be missed.

Briana - I’m so sorry to hear it. But I’m glad he doesn’t have to experience those scary seizures anymore. Love to his family.

Sharon Sleighter - Thank you for posting about our Norton. He was such a wonderful boxer, and I know his foster parents miss him so much already. Godspeed Norton.

deep ellum arts festival

The Deep Ellum Arts Festival was held this past weekend, and Sunday included a pet parade and booths for rescue organizations.  I arrived at the end of the parade, but was able to see the various award categories (best costume, best trick, etc.).  There were some big personalities on display — a 17 year old, one-earred (literally), mohawked schnauzer, a prancing rottweiler (I didn’t get any photos of him, unfortunately), a little pink fluffy twirling dog, and many others.

It’s a fun event in an eclectic, artsy part of town.  A bunch of great vendors and musicians– and the pups are out in full force!

Deep Ellum - Those pics are awesome!

in search of a few good homes | dfw rescue me

The annual Deep Ellum Arts Festival was this past weekend, and  Sunday included a pet parade (I’ll post some photos later this week).  Several rescue organizations set up and brought along some of their pups up for adoption.   These are a few of the many dogs available through DFW Rescue Me….

Joy’s a happy, fun loving, young lab (or, in other words, a little crazy — in the best possible way!).  She’s super sweet, LOVES to play, and is very smart.  I do feel a little bad though – when I first arrived, I was standing in front of Joy’s crate with a small, squeaky tennis ball in my hand, just absentmindedly playing with it while talking to a few of the volunteers.  A squeaky tennis ball just out of reach of a young yellow lab = sheer torture.

Callie’s a pretty girl with eyes that make you melt.  She’s only about 8 months old, but she’s so mild-mannered and gentle (though she will crawl up the front of you to give you hugs — seriously, one paw on either side of your waist, head leaning in against you.  So sweet.).

Lucy’s a year old heeler mix.  I think her white face makes her look wise well beyond her years.  She’s very sweet natured and even tempered.  Such a sweetheart.

And last, but certainly not least, Tilly.  She’s a young, super sweet, petite girl – and just gorgeous.  She has apparently exhibited some separation anxiety, but she’s now being fostered with some other pups so we’ll see how she does (she met her new foster sister, Kaya, on Sunday, and they snuggled up together in a crate so she will likely need to be adopted into a home with another dog).

maggie | dallas dog photography

Miss Maggie is such a sweet lug of a girl.  She had a hand in her own rescue — she escaped from her old home and made her way to a super nice, dog-friendly neighbor.  Her original owner was tracked down, but when our Good Samaritan returned her, something just didn’t feel right.  After losing sleep over it, she went back and asked for Maggie.  And so Maggie came to the home she picked for herself and she’s been there ever since.

Maggie’s not the most energetic dog I’ve ever photographed – she’s more of a lover and a lounger than a runner.  But girl does love her treats.

Happy Friday!
